Contraception

After an abortion, we discuss contraception to prevent you from becoming pregnant if you don’t want to be.

There are many options to choose from and your doctor will discuss which is most appropriate for you, based your preferences, specific circumstances and medical history.

Condoms are the only contraception that also prevent sexually transmitted infections – they aren’t always the most reliable, so it is recommended to use them in combination with another option.

Long acting reversible contraception options are the most reliable and cost effective.

Long acting reversible contraceptives include the implant and intrauterine device. Unfortunately as a Telehealth service we are unable to insert these for you, see below for face to face clinics.

Your regular GP can discuss and prescribe contraception, however if you are having difficulties accessing a GP appointment, alternative options include:

Mackay Sexual Health Service – contraception choices discussion, contraceptive implant insertion (public service)
