Aftercare
Studies show that provision of medical abortion by Telehealth is safe and effective. Some people find the process distressing or painful, so it is important to know what to expect from the process. There are potential complications that can also occur.
Our doctors will discuss in detail what to expect, and what can go wrong, as well as providing you written information to refer to.
See below for further information.
Expected process
The first medication tends to give minimal side effects, however we recommend wearing a pad in case of any bleeding.
After the second medication expect to have significant cramping and bleeding. Most people need to stay home with a support person for a minimum of 24 hours.
A medical certificate can be provided if you need to take time off work.
Bleeding
Bleeding is necessary and expected during the abortion process. Most people bleed heavily for the first 1-2 days, then the flow reduces but can continue for up to 4 weeks.
Concerning bleeding is if the blood is soaking through more than 2 thick pads per hour, for at least 2 hours (especially if associated with dizziness or fainting).
If concerning bleeding occurs or continues – please seek emergency medical attention.
Cramping
Cramping and lower abdominal pain is expected during the abortion process. Usually pain lasts a few hours, but can last up to 24 hours. The use of heat packs is recommended.
Pain relief such as ibuprofen, paracetamol and codeine can be useful, as recommended during your consultation.
If unable to manage pain at home – please seek emergency medical attention
Possible complications
Infection
Infection is an uncommon complication and risk can be reduced by avoiding putting anything inside the vagina for 2 weeks following the procedure (that means – no sex, no tampons, no swimming or soaking in the bath).
Signs of infection include the blood loss or discharge becoming smelly, pain increasing again after a few weeks, or feeling unwell with fevers.
If any of these occur – seek medical attention or phone us to arrange follow up.
Retained products of conception
The most common complication happens when there is remaining tissue left behind inside your uterus after the abortion.
Signs of retained products include prolonged bleeding – beyond 4 weeks. Sometimes this will require an appointment with a gynaecologist, to discuss options for emptying the uterus – either medication or a surgical procedure.
If you are still bleeding 4 weeks after your termination – seek medical attention or phone us to arrange follow up.
Failure of the procedure
It is very unlikely that the medication will not work. If you have had bleeding, cramping and passed clots or tissue these are signs that the abortion has been effective.
If you have not bled within 24 hours of the second step the medication may need to be repeated – this will require a follow up consult. Please phone to let us know.
